A misty road winding through Kerala tea country

Beyond Munnar · Kerala Journeys

Munnar is where it starts.
Not where it ends.

Backwaters, spice hills, old harbour streets and quiet coasts — we draw the whole Kerala route, and every day in between, as one written itinerary.

The line we draw most

Nine days, hills to the sea.

One of many. Swap a night, add a trek, slow a day down — nothing is fixed until you say so, and the whole line is priced as a single written quote.

Schematic — drawn to real coordinates, not to scale. The line starts and finishes at pin 4: Kochi is both where you land and where you leave. Hollow pins are additions you can fold into the same route.
  1. 1 Days 1–3

    Munnar

The hills, done properly rather than hurriedly. Three nights is what it takes to walk a working estate, be on a ridge at first light, and still have an evening spare for the river at Anakulam.

Three nights, not two. The second morning is the one that pays.

    • Tea trails & tastings
    • A sunrise trek
    • An Anakulam evening
  2. 2 Days 4–5

    Thekkady & the spice hills

An easy, beautiful drive south into Periyar’s forests and the working cardamom and pepper estates. The air changes before the scenery does — you smell the spice hills before you see them.

The shortest drive of the whole route. Take it slowly.

    • Periyar forest
    • Working spice estates
    • A slower pace
  3. 3 Days 6–7

    The backwaters

Alappuzha or Kumarakom, and the slowest afternoons in India. A houseboat night, village canals, and the particular quiet of water that has nowhere to be.

One houseboat night is plenty. Two is a long time on a boat.

    • A houseboat night
    • Village canals
    • Long, idle afternoons
  4. 4 Days 8–9

    Fort Kochi

Chinese nets on the harbour front, old trading streets, cafés and galleries — an unhurried finish that happens to sit minutes from your flight home.

Finish here, not in the hills. Nobody wants a four-hour drive to the airport.

    • Harbour-front streets
    • Cafés & galleries
    • An easy departure

Field note

Ghat roads don’t average what a map thinks they do.

These are the times we plan to — not the optimistic ones. A day with two of these legs in it is a day you spent in a car, and we will say so before you book it.

Every quote carries the real times for your dates and your vehicle.

Approximate driving distances and times on the nine-day route
LegRoughlyPlan for
Kochi airport Munnar≈130 km4 – 4½ hrs
Munnar Thekkady≈110 km3½ – 4 hrs
Thekkady The backwaters≈150 km4 – 4½ hrs

Distances are road distances, rounded. Monsoon, roadworks and market-day traffic all move the second column, never the first.

The rest of the sheet

What else goes on the map.

Three of these are already pinned above. The other three are ours to suggest when your dates or your interests point that way.

  • Wayanad

    On the map

Another green highland, quieter still — caves, waterfalls and long forest walks. Reached from the north, so it suits a longer loop rather than a detour.

    Pairs with — Treks, camping

  • Athirappilly

    On the map

The big falls and the river road, at their loudest in and just after the rains — and close enough to Kochi to sit at either end of a trip.

    Pairs with — Monsoon travel

  • Varkala & the coast

    On the map

Cliff-top Varkala or the long beaches further south — where a Kerala trip likes to end, if you have the days for it.

Pairs with — Honeymoons, long stays

  • Kumarakom

    Off the line

The quieter half of the backwaters, on Vembanad Lake. Swap it for Alappuzha if you would rather have birds than boats.

    Pairs with — Slow finishes

  • Thrissur & the temple towns

    Off the line

Festival country and the older heart of central Kerala — worth a day if your dates land near something happening.

    Pairs with — Culture, festivals

  • Kozhikode

    Off the line

Malabar food, a long beach and a trading history older than most of the coast. A different Kerala from the one the brochures show.

Pairs with — Food, long stays

How a journey gets drawn

You describe it. We route it.

  1. 1

    Tell us the shape

Days you have, where you land, and what you love — water, wildlife, food, walking, or doing very little.

  2. 2

    We draw the route

A day-by-day sheet with sensible drives, the right number of nights in each place, and one clear price.

  3. 3

    You change what you like

Swap a night, add a trek, slow a day down. Nothing is locked until you say so.

  4. 4

    One team, the whole way

The same people who drew it stay reachable while you travel it, from first transfer to last.

The practical half

What a journey includes — and what we’ll tell you straight.

What we arrange

  • Route design across Kerala, built around your dates
  • Stays matched to each stop and your budget
  • Transport and drivers between regions
  • Experiences en route — treks, tea trails, village days, boats
  • One point of contact from first message to last day

Good to know

  • Longer journeys need more lead time, especially in peak months
  • We’ll tell you honestly when a drive isn’t worth the day it costs
  • Group, family, honeymoon and student journeys all welcome
  • Prices are quoted in writing, itemised, before anything is booked

Good questions

Asked before. Answered honestly.

Do you only cover Kerala?

Kerala is our home ground and where our own network is strongest. Tell us what else you have in mind and we’ll say honestly what we can plan well.

How many days should we keep?

Munnar alone rewards three. A Munnar-plus-backwaters trip sits comfortably in six or seven. Ten lets you add a coast or a forest without rushing.

Can we start or end anywhere?

Most journeys start or end at Kochi. Tell us your flights and we’ll route around them.

How is it priced?

Per person, in writing, once we know dates, group size and the stays you want. Enquiring costs nothing.

Is the map to scale?

No — it’s a schematic. The outline and every pin sit at their real coordinates, so the shape and the distances between stops are honest, but it is drawn to be read, not measured.
